Virtual Paralegals must work under the supervision of an attorney and have an attorney review their advertising materials.

It was an ordinary day but a chance happening has got the Wisconsin State Bar in an uproar. On January 13, 2010, when retired Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice John Wilcox sat down for dinner in a local restaurant in central Wisconsin, he was surprised by freelance paralegal’s advertisement on his placemat.

“Paralegal services – estate planning, real estate, family, and much more.”

Intrigued, Justice Wilcox went to the business and saw a sign outside that read: “Family law, estate planning, pro se divorce, divorce/paternity, child support, child visitation, wills, power of attorney, deeds, transfer returns, and others.”

Subsequent investigation revealed a website for this business stating, “If you have a legal issue, cannot afford expensive attorney fees, do not like to hassle with all of the legal paperwork and want to have someone to assist you through the court system, then do not hesitate to call me.” [emphasis added]

While paralegals are an indispensable part of Wisconsin’s justice system and perform essential services, the way this business seems to be structured possibly creates yet another example of the unauthorized practice of law (UPL) that members of the State Bar of Wisconsin have identified in recent months.

Retired Justice Wilcox led the call to action and the State Bar of Wisconsin’s UPL Policy Committee took over.

If you are a Virtual Paralegal located anywhere, you must read this story and related articles on the Wisconsin Bar Association’s website, http://www.wisbar.org/

Unfortunately some programs are outdated and some professors prefer to teach lessons that will never applied to the student’s job in the future.
I have a stack of my latest books on my desk that are getting in the way. I live in a studio apartment, and my bookshelf is full.

In addition, I have some ebooks that I can easily send out.

I’d like to do a bit of giveaway today a few of them. All you need to do is leave a comment saying which one you’d like.

I’m listing them below (You can read more about them this website or on Amazon.com (http://paralegals.uslegal.com/bookstore). I’m asking you to nominate ONE (not more than one. . . .just one) and you’d like to be in the running for.

On January 29, I’ll randomly choose a winner for each book, contact you to get your mailing details and send them to you; I’ll pay the mailing costs. If you choose an e-book, and you are selected, I will send it to you as an attachment, and you can download to your harddrive.

Here are the 4 books:

LESSONS From the Top Paralegal Experts: The 15 Most Successful Paralegals in America and What you Can Learn From Them (See also, Amazon.com) ~ [softbound]

Paralegal’s Litigation Handbook, 2E (See also, Amazon.com) [e-book]

Instructor’s Manual to Accompany The Paralegal’s Litigation Handbook, 2E [paper-bound]

Legal Secretary’s Standard Deskbook[e-book]

Remember, you can only choose one – just use the name of the book in the comment — (this way I’ll know you’re getting a book you don’t have) so choose carefully!
