The National Federation of Paralegal Associations (NFPA®)
Founded in 1974, NFPA® was the first national paralegal association. Created as a non-profit federation, NFPA® is an issues-driven, policy-oriented professional association directed by its membership. It is consists of more than 50-member associations and represents over 11,000 individual members reflecting a broad range of experience, education, and diversity. It was also the first national association to have a website (www.paralegals.org). NFPA®’s Mission Statement and Core Purpose delineate its dedication to the advancement of the paralegal profession and leadership in the legal community. NFPA® offers individual paralegals benefits because NFPA® actively addresses and responds to issues affecting the entire paralegal profession.

The National Association of Legal Assistants
NALA is the nation’s leading professional association for paralegals and legal Assistants. As a non-profit organization, NALA provides continuing education and professional development programs for paralegals – from novice to experienced professionals.
The American Alliance of Paralegals, Inc.
The American Alliance was formed in 2003 by a group of paralegals who wanted to promote and improve the profession of paralegals; to advance the educational and literary standard of the paralegal profession; and to foster, encourage and disseminate information concerning the profession.
The American Association for Paralegal Education (AAfPE)
AAfPE is a national organization that serves the needs of paralegal educators and institutions offering paralegal educational programs. AAfPE’s primary purposes are rooted in the continuing development of higher quality education for paralegal students as well as to be the main source of authority in paralegal academics.
The National Association of Legal Professionals
The National Association of Legal Professionals (NALPS) has a strong heritage in the legal field and holds the honor of being the oldest association formed for legal support professionals. It was established in 1929 by its founder Eula Mae Jett, incorporated as the National Association of Legal Secretaries in 1949, and renamed NALS…the national association for legal professionals in 1999, the association has always been a leader in the legal support profession. In fact, some of the very first legal assistants in the profession were members of NALS and today over half of NALS’ membership is comprised of legal assistants and paralegals. NALS began to hold meetings not only on the local level but expanded to include state, regional, and even national meetings focusing on the legal services industry. This was the first time anything of this nature would take place.
The International Paralegal Managers Association (IPMA)

The International Paralegal Managers Association formerly known as the Legal Assistant Management Association promotes the development, professional standing, and visibility of paralegal management professionals. IPMA plays an essential role in law firm and legal department management. IPMA provides a rich resource of information including current and up to date topics in the area of legal assistant management. Find a wealth of knowledge and links to subjects including legal industry service providers, consultants and suppliers, information exchange from colleagues in the Paralegal Management profession, job openings, industry reports, seminars, and much more.
American Association of Legal Administrators
The Association of Legal Administrators’ mission is to promote and enhance the competence and professionalism of all members of the legal management team; improve the quality of management in law firms and other legal service organizations; and represent professional legal management and managers to the legal community and to the community at large. The Association of Legal Administrators’ goals are to develop and deliver programs and products that will provide high-quality, competency-based education to members of the legal management team; improve and strengthen the flow of information to and from the members; enhance the services and benefits available to members; increase the visibility and credibility of the Association of Legal Administrators and its members in the legal community through effective marketing and communications, and through partnering efforts with the bar and other law-related associations, among others.
ABA Standing Committee on Paralegals (ABA/SCOP)

The Standing Committee on Paralegals develops and promotes policies relating to the education, employment, training and effective use of paralegals. The Standing Committee, through its Approval Commission, continues to serve as the body to set standards for paralegal education. The Standing Committee monitors trends in the field and recommends for approval and reapproval to the House of Delegates (the ABA’s policy-making body) those paralegal training programs that have met the standards and guidelines set by the ABA for quality paralegal education.
In addition to overseeing its approval program, the Standing Committee also monitors trends in the field. The Standing Committee maintains an information service for those persons interested in becoming paralegals. In an average year, the staff office processes more than 6,000 requests for information and responds to numerous requests for help.
American Association of Legal Nurse Consultants (AALNC)
Founded in 1989, the American Association of Legal Nurse Consultants (AALNC) is a not for profit membership organization dedicated to the professional enhancement and growth of registered nurses practicing in the specialty area of legal nurse consulting and to advancing this nursing specialty. Canadian Association of Paralegals (CAP)
CAP is a national association, incorporated on May 22, 1980 by Letters Patent, under Part II of the Canada Corporations Act , under the legal name Canadian Association of Legal Assistants ⁄ Association canadienne des assistants juridiques.
Currently, CAP has over 600 members across Canada and its 14 directors and officers represent several Canadian provinces.
CAP members, directors and officers are governed by its by-laws, as amended from time to time, and a code of ethics, in addition to various operating policies and position statements as may be adopted by the board of directors, from time to time.
National Notary Association (NNA)
